The Air Jordan 1 was released in 1985 kicking off not only the greatest legacy in sneakers, but also the greatest legacy in basketball history. The first round, third overall pick, Michael Jordan, was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the 1984 NBA Draft. Before landing in the NBA, Michael Jordan had a resume that no other player could touch. Jordan excelled in college basketball at North Carolina and helped lead Team USA to a gold medal in the 1984 Olympic Games.Wearing the Air Jordan 1, Michael Jordan soared in his rookie year. Jordan earned a spot on the All-Star team, finished third in scoring (28.2 ppg), brought back the Bulls back to the playoffs, and not surprisingly was Rookie of the Year.Nike, a brand having troubles breaking into the basketball market, saw the potential in Michael Jordan as a player as well as a marketing icon and was immediately signed.

When Michael Jordan returned from playing baseball to the NBA, he was often seen wearing the Air Jordan X (10). One retro color-way that is often remembered is the Air Jordan 10 (X) Retro White, Varsity Red and Light Steel Grey. This color-way is very similar to the original Jordan 10 Chicago color-way with a different color. Featured is a combination of subtle colors and the classy design of the Air Jordan X silhouette. The Air Jordan X (10) Retro White / Varsity Red - Light Steel Grey was originally released on September 17th, 2005 retailing at $125.

Air Jordan 11 (XI)
The Air Jordan XI (11) was released in 1995/96. Jordan was back for real and he led the Bulls to yet another NBA victory. He also became the second man to ever win Most Valuable Player awards for the regular season, All-Star Game and NBA Finals in the same season. He averaged 30.4 points per game and scored 40 or more points in nine games. What a come back!

Triple come back
If Jordan was back, so was Tinker Hatfield. A terrific design with a new patent leather and the return of the clear rubber sole made the Air Jordan XI the most appreciated Air Jordan model ever released.

But when the design stunned everyone, the durability and quality was disappointing. Again the clear rubber soles easily yellowed and the patent leather also tended to crack up and/or easily get scratched. Top design – lacking quality

With the Air Jordan 11 (XI)’s, we also saw the return of low-tops. Something that would follow the Air Jordan’s all the way to the Air Jordan 16 (XVI)’s (though skipping the Air Jordan 12 (XII)’s). Back to the banning days
Michael was fined $5000 per game during the semifinals in 1995 for wearing the Air Jordan 11 (XI) Original (OG) – Concords (White / Black – Dark Concord). He wore them twice and this was looked upon as uniform violation as the rest of the Bulls wore entirely black shoes. (This kind of brings back memories from when the Air Jordan 1 (I)’s were banned from the NBA.)Being fined two games was enough though and the next game he wore Anfernee Hardaway’s shoes. But did Nike enjoy MJ not wearing AJ’s? Probably not as he got the Air Jordan 11 (XI) Original (OG) – Space Jams (Black / Varsity Royal – White) for the remaining games. The same shoes that could also be seen in the movie Space Jam. Retro fever
When the Air Jordan 11’s were retroed in 2000-2001, they would prove to become the retro that sold in the highest quantity ever and also the fastest selling Air Jordan’s of all time.

The legendary air jordan retro 11 was first released for for 1995-96 season. The air jordan retro 11 are the most famous and most popular model of the Air Jordan line. A terrific design with a new patent leather and the return of the clear rubber sole made the air jordans 11 the most appreciated Air Jordan model ever released. With the Air Jordan XI’s, we also saw the return of low-tops. One of the best pairs we've seen in a very long time!Three mids were released, and two I.E. lows (which sold for $115.00). Only five pairs of the Air Jordan Retro XI “Space Jams” were made for Michael, for the movie Space Jam.

Air Jordan 12 (XII)

The Air Jordan XII (12) was released in 1996/1997. In the 96/97 season Jordan saw himself being bounced off the MVP throne by Karl Malone, who won the honor with the slimmest margin one can think off. Jordan got his revenge in the finals though, and led the Bulls past Malone’s Utah Jazz and also picked up the Finals MVP honors for the fifth time (out of five tries!).

Sun sets in Japan
This shoe was again something totally new when it came to design. The way the ribbed leather seemed to go all the way to down to the ground due to the match in color with the midsoles, really made people turn their heads. This unique design was partly inspired by the flag of the Japanese Army & Navy in which the red circle is surrounded by a “sunset”.

The Air Jordan 12 (XII)’s were also one of the most durable AJ’s to date. It seemed almost nothing could break these shoes down. One major disadvantage was that they pretty easily got dirty and was hard to clean. Especially the ones with white midsoles/soles.

Jordan Brand
In September 1997 Nike decided to launch a new sub-brand of Nike called Jordan Brand. This made the Air Jordan XII one of the first products that were a part of the Jordan Brand collection.

Probably due to this fact, the Air Jordan 12 XII was the first Air Jordan that did not have a Swoosh or a Nike logo anywhere on the shoe. Not even on the insole.

On December 30th Jordan broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s NBA record, by scoring in double-digits for the 788th consecutive game. He also led the Bulls to their sixth NBA Championship title.
Panther paws
Hatfield kept on making original designs. The Air Jordan 13 (XIII)’s featured a nice hologram on the ankle and the design was said to be inspired by a panther. The outsole with pads like a paw and circles representing whiskers.
The hologram showed the following images;
- A basketball
- The number 23
- The jumpman logo
Two different low-top colors were also released to the public. These without the hologram.
Crappy variants
Most of the previous models had been produced in Taiwan but Air Jordan 12 (XII) took the step to China and Air Jordan 13 (XIII) was also produced in China. It’s weird but this made fakes or so called factory variants of AJ’s very common, seems as if the factory really knew that this was a product that they could make money on. The fakes usually had awful color combinations and the quality was far from satisfying.

Air Jordan Retro XIV (14)

Air Jordan Retro XIV (14)
The Air Jordan XIV (14) was released in 1998/1999. This was the very last Air Jordan model that Michael would sport in NBA before his retirement. On January 13th 1999 Michael announced his retirement from the NBA basketball for the second and final(?) time.
Retired in style
The design was inspired by Michaels car, the Ferrari 550 M, and was made by Tinker Hatfield together with Mark Smith. A great stylish design and a great shoe for Michael to end his NBA career in.
This was the first Air Jordan that would feature laces with metal tips. Something that both the Air Jordan 15 (XV)’s and Air Jordan 16 (XVI)’s designs also would use.
14 = XIV
The Air Jordan 14 (XIV)’s also begun the trend of having a number of things that would count towards the model# of the shoe. On the Air Jordan 14 (XIV)’s each shoe had seven jumpmans; ferrari-like shield, insole, sole, back, 2 x lace tip and front. Counting them on both shoes makes it a total of 14 (XIV) Jumpmans.
Again, lots and lots of fakes/factory variants went to the market and color combos that were horrible were seen here and there.

Air Jordan Retro XV(15)

Air Jordan Retro XV(15)
The Air Jordan 15 (XV) was released in 1999/2000. This was it. The first shoe after Michael’s retirement. It could’t have been easy for Nike/JB to decide to release a shoe when the athlete that was 100% connected to this product had just retired. But the decision turned out to be good.
Prada rip-off or original flying design
The design of the Air Jordan 15 (XV)s originated from the air craft X-15 which was developed by NASA during the 1950’s and was, to say the least, a bit radical.
The tounge of the shoe was sticking out in a style that very much made your thoughts go directly to Michael himself and his tounge sticking out. The sides of the shoe were in a woven pattern.
Many people said this was a rip-off of a Prada shoe when it comes to the red stripe at the back of the shoe. Maybe the Prada shoes were inspiration sources for Hatfield as well, but that’s very uncertain.

Air Jordan Retro XVI(16)

The Air Jordan Retro XVI(16)was released in 2001. Following the success of theAir Jordan 15 (XV), there was no doubt that Nike/JB would continue to release Air Jordan’s. The Air Jordan 16 (XVI)s were the next shoe to hit the shelves.
Hatfield moves on
The Air Jordan 16 (XVI) were designed by Nike’s Senior Footwear Designer Wilson Smith. This meant it was the first design since the Air Jordan 3 (III) that Tinker Hatfield wasn’t behind. Hatfield was said to have moved up and he left Smith with the hard task in creating a revolutionary new design.
Smith decided to bring in a few design elements/fabrics from earlier releases. For instance we saw the return of the clear rubber sole (Air Jordan 5 (V), Air Jordan 6 (VI), Air Jordan 11 (XI)) and they also featured patent leather (Air Jordan 11 (XI)).
Gaiter on – gaiter off
But what made the Air Jordan 16 (XVI) unique was the brand new gaiter/shroud that covered the shoe and that could be removed to give the shoe a brand new look. Not only was this for stylish purposes, it also had a thermal functionality.
The shoe was a little stiff and to wear the shroud/gaiter when playing basketball really wasn’t a good idea, as it pretty easily could fall off. The black/red and white/mn navy both featured patent leather which very easily got creased and cracked. Best for playing in were the one’s without patent leather, for sure…
The overall design was great and it’s great to see a new designer put his foot forward. Hopefully we’ll see Wilson Smith involved in the work with coming designs.

Air Jordan Retro XVII(17)

Air Jordan Retro XVII(17)
Air Jordan Retro XVII(17) was released in 2002. Michael joined the Washington Wizards as President of Basketball Operations in January of 2000 and selected Kwame Brown with the top overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft. On September 25th 2001 he resigned his position and instead signed a player contract.
MJ was back again!
Keeping the cover
The Air Jordan Retro XVII(17) design was said to be inspired by three things; “the fine details from an Aston Martin, the smooth lines and flow of a jazz solo and the long Air Jordan history of innovations in style.” (cgkicks.com)

Well, if the Air Jordan 17 (XVII) were equipped with a gaiter/shroud that was removable and that would cover almost more than half of the shoe, the Air Jordan 17 (XVII)s were no worse. With a removable midfoot cover you were once again given the power to choose whether or not the laces should be visible!
Metal and CD
But the midfoot cover was not everything. This shoe came with a Jumpman embossed metal carrying case. So, this was not your average shoe box. OK, we had seen this when the Japan exclusive Air Jordan 1 (I) were released on January 1st 2001 but hey, now everyone could get one.
But, believe it or not, it doesn’t stop there. In the lid of the carrying case a CD-rom could be found. Nike really knew how to make their customers happy!
Overpriced?
When you decide to add a metal case and a CD something tells you the production cost must rise quite a bit. This also seemed to be the case as the Air Jordan 17 (XVII) had a retail price at $200.

Air Jordan Retro 18 (XVIII)

Air Jordan Retro 18 (XVIII)
The Air Jordan Retro18 (XVIII) was released in 2003. Michael played on for the Wizards, but his knee didn’t quite hold up for all the games. He returned by the end of the season though and ended his career on April 16th 2003 against the 76ers. This time I think we can say with certainty that he’s not coming back again…
New head designer
Creator of the design of the Air Jordan Retro 18 (XVIII) was Tate Kuerbis (Jordan Senior Footwear Designer). A person that had been part of the Jordan footwear design team since 1999 and with Nike since 1995. The inspiration of the design is a combination fo a number of things; Sleek racing lines of the auto world, Carbon fiber-based monocoque of F1 race cars, Race car driving shoes (rubber heel wrap) and Fine Italian dress shoes (bold stitching on the soles).
What’s next?!?
With the Air Jordan Retro 17 (XVII) having had a briefcase and a CD-rom the big question was how the Air Jordan Retro 18 (XVIII) could possibly match this. “What is next?” was the big question for all the sneakerfreaks out there…
Well the Air Jordan Retro 18 (XVIII) was no disappointment. With a new Jordan box with a nice cut out 18 with foil behind it and a new pull-out opening the box itself was just SUPER! Ok, it wasn’t a briefcase, but c’mon I’d rather pay $175 than $200 for AJ’s.
Brush and towel
In the package there was also a brush (black suede hi-tops) and a towel included. A great set of tools that simplifies the cleaning of the shoes.
Both the Air Jordan Retro 16 (XVI) and the Air Jordan Retro 17 (XVII) had a modified model called “+”. With the XVIII’s this was taken a little bit further and a Air Jordan 18.5 was released. The design was pretty similar but the lace cover was lifted off and the Jumpman was brought forward on the side of the shoe. The 18.5 also featured a plastic pants leg-stopper with the years 1985-2003 written on them.
